A 30-year-old Syrian man in Linz was apparently able to fend off a fraud attempt just in time by becoming suspicious and hanging up on the phone. A caller had introduced herself to him as an investigator from the Federal Police and requested his data. According to police, there is currently an increase in such calls from fake investigators.
The 30-year-old Syrian man from Linz received a call from a number he did not recognize on Monday. A woman with an Indian accent told him in English she was from the Federal Police and stated several times that his identity had been misused.
Asked for data
However, she cited investigations into money laundering and drug trafficking as the reason for her call. She claimed to need the 30-year-old’s data in order to take the necessary steps. After initial hesitation, the Syrian gave his data and asked the woman for her name and service number. She gave her name, a service number and the file number in question.
Immediately hang up
Subsequently, 30-year-old was connected with a male person. After a short conversation, however, he had so much doubt that he hung up.
Since such cases accumulate at present, on the part of the police it is urgently advised to terminate such discussions and/or calls immediately!
